I don’t want to be intelligence insulting, but I guess the big block of text is too boring for most people. Everybody that uses tumblr should be interested in this though.
I’ll dumb this down as much as I can: Congress is going to be voting on an act soon -that’s being pushed by the RIAA (groan) and the MPAA - that would allow corporations to censor websites if they in any vague way made available copyrighted materials or facilitated access to them.
So for instance - if somebody on tumblr posted a song - or has a song player on their blog: The entirety of Tumblr could be blocked. To all users. If somebody posted a clip from a movie -all of Tumblr could be blocked. Get it? The site would be blocked, google would have to remove all links to Tumblr, etc. It would be bad obviously, and there’s a real possibility it could happen.
What should you do?
Write your representatives with this easy form letter.
There is also this somewhat less gracefully worded petition if that is your thing.
I tried to make this simple as possible to get the basic point across, though the reality is far more complex. Both links give additional detailed information that is worth reading.
